Garsiliato Castle and Statio philosophiana: nature and culture along the roads of history

In the territory of Mazzarino, in the province of Caltanissetta, the Castle of Garsiliato dominates for a thousand years the Gela river valley, resting on a rock of gypsum crystals. The Normans built it to defend the roads that linked Gela to Catania. Around it, stories of medieval kings, barons and lords.

Not far away, the Statio philosophiana, a rest station along the ancient road that connected Agrigento to Catania, marked in the Itinerarium Antonini and wanted by the Romans to make men and goods travel. Here the travelers could sleep, change horses and bathe in the small public baths.

Easy route, 7 km round trip.
